Polish NT: A deeper look into our Defense

By Krzysziek Moskal

Poland will play two important friendlies in preparation for Euro 2012, Lithuania on Friday and Greece on Tuesday. As many of you already know none of our squad’s issues have been resolved – but in turn have actually gotten worse.

Our weakest link – the backline has become a puzzle that has lost all of its pieces except for one; Lukasz Piszczek. The Borussia Dortmund wingback has significantly developed and become the prize possession of our defense. While, our other star Sebastian Boenisch has undergone another surgery and will be out for months to come.

Now, about our puzzle - two pieces are out of reach as their paperwork has not been passed leaving Damien Perquis and Manuel Arboleda out. Kamil Glik who Smuda believe is our most promising player is actually the most inconsistent defender I have ever seen. Yes, he does play in the Italian Serie A but he is far too often the flop of a match, but give him some credit once every 4 games he has a good match. Either way, for the International stage he is far too slow and does not have the quality to be a starter.

Maciej Sadlok is very similar to Glik another inconsistent player, but part of the problem is Smuda continues to play him out of position, but now he has also been injured and may not play in the two friendlies. What about Dariusz Dudka? The wingback from Auxurre who has finally settled in the starting 11 has also a very similar problem he is very inconsistent as well. I think everyone sees the puzzle here our pieces are not fitting and as a fan it is very irritating.

Hubert Wolakiewicz who was recently brought onto the Lech Poznan squad had a horrid time against Braga and if he can't defend a Braga attacker then he does not belong on our NT. Jakub Rzezniczak has finally become a starter as he has also had problems with inconsistency but hopefully this young player will get a good shot. Tomasz Jodlowiec has played in several games but I do not see a star, I hope he proves me wrong and plays well with everything that's happened he might actually start. Finally, Arkadiusz Glowacki an older experienced player has put in some good performances as of late and should get the nod to start.

*Zewlakow will play in the Greece game to give him 102 caps and a chance to be thanked by his Greek supporters, supposedly Michal’s coach asked Smuda to give him one last call for that reason.

My starting backline for the friendlies:

---Piszczek ---- Glowacki --- Jodlowiec ----Dudka---

Who do you think about Poland's defense at this moment?
